About Páramo de Ocetá Regional Natural Park

Páramo de Ocetá Regional Natural Park, located in the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes within Boyacá department, protects one of the largest and best-conserved páramo ecosystems in the world. Spanning roughly 14,000 hectares around the town of Monguí, it sits at an altitude ranging from 3,000 to over 3,900 meters above sea level. The park is characterized by its unique páramo ecosystem—a tropical alpine tundra with an extraordinary concentration of endemic plants such as frailejones (Espeletia spp.), which are vital to water retention and carbon storage. Its rugged terrain features rolling moorlands, peat bogs, lakes, and glacial valleys, supporting diverse bird species including the Andean condor and several hummingbirds. The park is culturally significant as well, bearing indigenous Muisca heritage and historic agricultural terraces that still influence the landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the park for hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, and photography. Iconic hiking routes include trails to the scenic Lake Verde, frailejón forests, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Andes. The park’s conservation efforts are crucial for protecting water sources that supply regional communities downstream. Visitors experience a blend of natural splendor and rich cultural heritage, with cool, crisp air lending itself to immersive nature exploration. Despite its elevation, the park remains accessible year-round, attracting eco-tourists and researchers dedicated to páramo conservation and Andean biodiversity.
